The College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Women at the University of Baghdad, has organized recently a scientific symposium delivered by Prof. Dr. Widad Kazem Al-Zuhairi, for the undergraduate students entitled (The dynamics of the referee positioning, movement and tasks in handball).
Dr. Widad al-Zuhairi explained the tasks acted by handball referees and how they manage the match, as the game of handball must be two main referees called the first referee and the second referee, and the two have the same authority to manage and monitor the behavior of players from the moment they enter until they leave the field, so their tasks can be described as pre-match tasks, during and after the match. Then she clarified the tasks of the two assistant referees, namely the scorekeeper and timekeeper, where the first is responsible of the records of the two teams, the scoring sheet and the goals scored, the entry of players who arrive after the beginning of the match, the monitoring of players who are not entitled to participate in the match and who are not qualified, the control of the number of players and administrators of each team in the switching area, the control of the entry and exit of substitutes, the calculation of the number of attacks after one of the players receives treatment on the field. The timekeeper is responsible of the playing time, the basic and additional runs, suspension time or ending the match. She even noted the best way for the referees to stand on the field is to be in a diagonal stand so as to be able to watch the players from all sides since they switch their positions every 10 minutes and they continuously give judgments according to the changing situations of the match.
