The College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad has organized a dialogue session on the phenomenon of the spread of informal settlements and urban slums in Iraq, in the presence of the architect and urban planner Prof. Akram al-Okaili, who discussed with the master students this topic through exchange of visions with both Assist. Prof. Dr. Abdul Hussein al-Askari and Assist. Prof. Dr. Huda Alwan based upon a self-construction approach that employs individuals in the management of the resources available to them in order to solve the problem of residential slums, asserting that the basic services and infrastructure should be subject to the control of state institutions.
The participants recommended the need for facing the biggest challenges facing the city of Baghdad and other Iraqi cities in light of the phenomenon of informal settlements and urban slums, where many areas and even residential shops in our cities were formed on the basis and independent of any government support, so slums became the most obvious expression at present since it is connected with poverty.
