The Center for the Revival of Arab Scientific Heritage at the University has organized a scientific symposium entitled “Protection of Cultural and Historical Property during Wars and Armed Conflicts in the Light of International Conventions”. Prof. Dr. Amal Daoud Salim and Prof. Dr. Mariam Malallah Ghazal from the College of Education for Women has presented a research paper entitled (Cultural legacy and ways to protect it from the perspective of sustainable development), which included the forms and methods of protecting cultural heritage, which is legal protection, which is divided into three international, regional and local levels, then administrative protection, which varies from country to country according to political, social, economic and religious conditions, then modern technical protection with tools and devices to control heat and humidity, then security protection through the issuance of regulations clarifying the penalties for crimes of passive infringement of cultural heritage and then technical protection through conservation operations.
Then Assist. Lecturer Mohammed Ismail Juma from the College of Law also presented a paper entitled “Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage during Armed Conflicts” showing that Iraq has a national cultural record full of intangible cultural heritage that requires preservation, as specified in the UNESCO Convention, No. 12 of August 24, 2009 where Iraq has joined in 2003. It is noteworthy that the components of Iraq’s intangible heritage are diverse, with a huge amount of elements that have not yet been registered, along with those that have been recorded in the international list, such as the Iraqi Maqam, Eid Khader Elias and Nowruz Holidays, as well as the provision of services and hospitality during the Arba’een Pilgrimage in Karbala.
