Assist. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Adnan Aziz al-Mayali, the assistant dean of the college of political science for scientific affairs at the University of Baghdad, was selected as a member of the security and peace committee that is chaired by the assistant rector for scientific affairs, Prof. Dr. Marwan Abdul Hamid Ashour, along with the membership of assistant dean for scientific affairs of the college of education for humanities (Ibn Rushd) and Prof. Dr. Huda Abbas Ali, the assistant dean for scientific affairs of the college of education for women, Prof. Dr. Hind Abbas Ali.

This committee is in charge of initiating joint professional master’s programs in peace, security, training and capacity building through the establishment of courses in water resources management, prison management, entrepreneurship and the qualification of peace mediators. Dr. Ahmed al-Mayali pointed out that several topics were discussed during the meeting, most notably reviewing the mission of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) regarding the provision of support to Iraq in the field of establishing educational programs – designing programs to obtain a master’s degree in security and peace topics, explaining that the design of the program and curricula was clarified to be the responsibility of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. The participants reached at several recommendations supporting the proposals for cooperation between Iraq and UNITAR regarding the design or development of a “Master Degree in Security and Peace Program” at the faculties of “Political Science, Education for Humanities (Ibn Rushd), Education for Women and Arts) in order to adopt curricula consistent with that of international universities, as well as determining the inputs of the program and the number of hours and units through a committee formed in this regard in coordination with the postgraduate affairs department for the sake of water management, combating desertification, prison management, combating terrorism, the rule of law and the rehabilitation of peace mediators and others.
