The Committee supporting volunteer work in cooperation with Ibn Sina Unit for E-Learning at the College of Pharmacy, has organized an electronic workshop entitled (Disease and Treatment Methods in Ancient Mesopotamia) delivered by Prof. Dr. Osama Adnan Yahya, a lecturer from the Department of History, the Faculty of Arts at Al-Mustansiriyah University.
The workshop included several themes, including what are the common diseases, causes, the goddess responsible for the disease, the most important treatments and recipes used in ancient times and the role of the ancient goddess in healing, as well as the most prominent goddess of medicine in Mesopotamia called Gula. This goddess was originally the goddess of death and later turned into a goddess of medicine and healing, where human health was depending especially on them, so people used to get rid of diseases. The lecturer stated that the cuneiform texts describe Gula as the heavenly mother who brings life back to the dead, and who revives the dead with a touch of her hand, as well as the life-sustainer. The most important objectives of this workshop is to learn about the history and beginning of the emergence of pharmacology, the means and treatments used and their importance in ancient times in order to prepare the ground for drawing a mural about the history of pharmacy embodied by students with a voluntary work of art including the most prominent figures of interest in pharmacy.
