The Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnologies for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad, in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, has organized a symposium entitled “Electronic extortion: a reality that threatens the future” aimed at providing a detailed explanation of this phenomenon and the laws that may deter it, as well as its emergence as an alien behavior to Iraqi community characterized by authentic customs and traditions.
Dr. Wassan Abdul Razzaq Gharbi, gave a lecture on “Extortion and Cybercrimes” in which she discussed the types of cybercrime and their appearance, especially in light of the emergence of advanced technological systems and their impact on the individual and the role of communication networks in their implementation. Then she talked about the concepts of cyberterrorism, cyber stalking and their risks to people, as well as the mechanisms to combat them. In turn, the Colonel Yas from the General Directorate of Traffic in Baghdad gave a special lecture entitled “Electronic Extortion in the Iraqi Law”, explaining the elements of this phenomenon which must be available in order to be classified as a crime and the penalties legislated within the Iraqi law in relation to electronic blackmail, pointing out that there are severe laws for this crime according to the degree of extortion.
