The department of astronomy and space, in collaboration with the continuing education unit at the college of science, held a lecture entitled “The developments in the peaceful uses of outer space and its role in climate change” in the presence of a number of students, faculty members and those concerned with astronomical and physical affairs and remote sensing. The dean of the college, Prof. Dr. Abdul Karim al-Qazzaz, delivered a speech in which he congratulated a number of professors who have recently gained the membership of the International Astronomical Union, where 19 Iraqi scholars and professors where chosen for their academic expertise and research to be members in this international union that return positively to the reputation of the University of Baghdad in international forums.

The aim of the lecture was to emphasize the importance of space science and technology as well as their peaceful applications in general, including space exploration and study natural phenomena and physical bodies occurring in outer space and the impact of such studies on the economic, social and security sectors, in order to fortify such activities and invest them in the service of our national development. Also he confirmed the need to establish a specialized body responsible for initiatives and attracting scientific competencies in space technology. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Najat Mohammed Rashid, who reviewed the work of the committee set up by the ministry of higher education and scientific research on the peaceful uses of space for humanity in particular and environment in particular, taking into account Iraq’s regional and global representation in the field of capacity-building, efforts made by Iraqi research centers and specialized universities for the sake of spreading knowledge and contribution in accelerating the pace of scientific progress in the country to achieve the desired goals. It is noteworthy that this event was attended by the assistant dean for scientific affairs at the college in addition to a number of heads of departments, where Prof. Dr. Abdul Karim al-Qazzaz honored the new members of the International Astronomical Union.
