The management of the International Astronomical Union has announced the membership of 19 Iraqi researchers and professors, mostly from the Department of Astronomy and Space at the College of Science at the University of Baghdad, which may reflect positively to its reputation in international forums. The astronomy department had previously formed a specialized committee that nominated 19 Iraqi members in this union.

It is noteworthy that the international astronomical union is a nongovernmental organization with the objective of advancing astronomy in all aspects, including promoting astronomical research, outreach, education, and development through global cooperation of dozens of countries for the sake of developing programs in space exploration, technology and global space agencies, and has nine specialized scientific departments, including those related to galaxies and stars, including those specializing in nuclear particles as well as communications and radio astronomy, in addition to those dealing with the teaching of astronomy curricula in schools and universities and distributed in five places, including four offices are distributed in the world where the headquarters is in Paris, each managing a particular affair, for example, organizing scientific conferences, monitoring events, etc., so the union has an important qualitative weight among sober academic institutions around the world.
