The Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnologies for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad has organized an online workshop on “Plant tissue transplantation and their applications”, chaired by Assist. Prof. Dr. Emad Hamdi Jassim and Assist. Prof. Dr. Maha Ibrahim Saleh who gave valuable lectures in the presence of a number of researchers and specialists in this discipline.

The workshop aimed to train students and researchers in the plant tissue culture technologies that is defined as culturing plant seeds, organs, explants, tissues, cells, or protoplasts on a chemically defined synthetic nutrient media under sterile and controlled conditions of light, temperature, humidity and also under controlled nutritional and environmental conditions so as to produce the clones of plants that have the same genetic traits as the parent plant. The lecturers recommended urging Iraqi scholars to apply these techniques in their experiments whether in their universities or in research centers, calling for increasing the production of laboratory drug compounds away from the field so as to reduce the cost of producing medicines, effort and time in light of the purity of such compounds compared to other derived from plants cultivated in the field throughout the year.
