The Center for Market Research and Consumer Protection at the University of Baghdad held a lecture entitled “Smart Food Packaging and Its Impact on Consumer Protection” delivered by the Editor-in-Chief of the Iraqi Journal of Market Research and Consumer Protection, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Abdul Razzaq al-Sufi. The lecture highlighted the latest technology adopted in the world for food packaging to give an indication of the quality and safety of food for human consumption, since this topic is an important consideration in the field of consumer protection due to the serious health risks posed by damaged and unfit food for human beings.

The lecturer also pointed out the need to follow the control requirements, quality and standard specifications that determine the validity of the product as approved by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which obliges the manufacturer to take all necessary measures so that its products would be manufactured according to some standard specifications, and then evolved to follow the controls of the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) that is a management system in which food safety is addressed through the analysis and control of biological, chemical, and physical hazards. Also the mechanism of action of packages is relied on discoloration of food when oxygen enters the can leading to microbial growth that causes food damage, especially in frozen meat.
