The Maternal and Newborn Nursing Branch, in collaboration with the Scientific Unit at the College of Nursing has organized an electronic scientific symposium entitled “Genetic Counseling” via Google Meet service and in the presence of a number of professors and postgraduate students, presented by Assist. Prof. Dr. Hawraa Hussein Ghafil.
The sessions aimed to review an introduction to genetics and genetic diseases, as well as to provide examples of how traits are transmitted from parents to children, and to clarify the important role of genetic consultation before marriage. The lecturer stressed the importance of genetics in uncovering the genetic basis of some diseases transmitted from parents to children was discussed, as well as the way these diseases are transmitted and their impact on the health of the individual and recommended the need to raise awareness and education in premarital genetic consultation, especially for families with a genetic history of genetically transmitted diseases such as Down Syndrome and Mediterranean Anemia (Thalassemia) to avoid their transmission from parents to children.
