The Department of Biology, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Science, hosted the scientific lecture entitled “Toxic Plants and Their Medical Importance” in the presence of a number of students, researchers and those concerned with plant and medical affairs. The aim of the lecture was to show the importance of these toxic species from a medical point of view with the spread of toxic plants in all places, as they are found in and around the gardens of houses, on the sides of roads and limbs of fields, in pastures, forests, etc., and the widespread poisoning caused in most cases by plants, specific conditions and factors, to be able to know them and avoid many cases of poisoning with toxic plants.

The lecture was delivered by Assist. Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Jabir to identify toxic plants and their types that cause humans and different animals when fed, included pathological symptoms accompanied by irritation or skin sensitivity, indicating that such symptoms may result in different health consequences, appearing directly or after a while, as a result of the accumulation of toxic substances in the tissues of the organism, pointing out the difference in the toxicity of toxic plants different to their types, pointing out that some of them are very toxic as thorns and the same for plants and others Poisoning occurs when fed in a large amount or for a long time such as the pecan plant, which is used in a small amount in salads, but feeding in a large amount of it and for a long time may lead to poisoning that appears in the form of muscle tremor, tremors, depression, and inability to move, due to the plant’s high concentration of Oxalic acids that cause hypoglycemia.
