The center for strategic and international studies at the University of Baghdad held recently a seminar on “Nuclear Energy Experiment in the Arab Region” chaired by Dr. Satar Al-Jabri who addressed this topic extensively. He stated that the nuclear energy in the Arab region was widely accepted enthusiastically in its early days, but it was not popular and developed in both its military and civilian forms later for legal and strategic reasons and that the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists was first distributed in December 1945.

Since then, the world realized that the energy generated from the atom seemed to have changed everything and nuclear power in the 1990s and 2000s seemed more positive and returned to the circle of preference between governments and citizens. So the challenge now for the nuclear industry is to learn the lessons of failure to promote the first major wave of nuclear investment for peaceful purposes and to prevent the recurrence of its disasters.
