The department of geology at the college of science held a scientific symposium on “The sustainable development of potential Iraqi geological parks: Sawa lake and marshes” in the presence of a number of professors and students of the graduate and postgraduate studies specialized in geology, geography, water resources, architecture and environment.

The symposium aimed at examining the importance of geo-parks at the scientific, economic, touristic, investment and national levels at the central and southern Iraq during various civilizations with the aim to introduce new ideas and future aspirations for the preservation of biodiversity and the protection of cultural heritage in the Iraqi marshlands, taking into account preserving the natural and cultural heritage. This event included several lectures on the cultural significance of the marshes of southern Iraq as a world heritage site and its animal diversity in light of studying the cuneiform texts in Mesopotamia.
