Abstract

Immobilization growing cells technique was considered as an innovative and very effective process in dealing with major environmental challenges for bioremediation of petroleum-refinery wastewater. In this study, an innovative material known as Gum Arabic was used for the first time on a global level to immobilize the bacterial cells. Gum Arabic is a natural polysaccharide material can be extracted from certain types of trees and it is used in food industry as a stabilizer. The immobilized cells were prepared as beads by the reinforcement of this natural polysaccharide (Gum Arabic) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). This technique was applied for real samples of petroleum refinery wastewater. Results revealed the potential effectiveness of this technique for pollutants removal as well as the recycling of beads for excessive biotreatment cycles.
