The institute of genetic engineering and biotechnology for postgraduate studies at the University of Baghdad organized a seminar on: \u201cRole of Interleukin in Obesity\u201d via the FCC platform, delivered by Assist. Prof. Dr. Basima Qassem Hassan. The lecturer tried first to identify the concept of obesity as a medical condition and disease characterized by an excessive amount of body fat which leads to serious damage to health.<\/p>\n

Then she stated that more than 500 million people around the world suffer from obesity, according to the statistics of the World Health Organization, and the severe pathological disorders resulting from it, such as metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, sleep disorders and chronic infections, all of which represent major health concerns, especially in the developed and developing countries. Dr. Basima Qassem indicated that obesity is the result of an imbalance of energy intake and it is a complex multi-factor process, since that the adipose tissue is not just a reservoir of energy, but rather a healthy, multifunctional glandular organ that secretes a group of biologically active peptides (short strings of amino acids).<\/p>\n
