A study at the college of science assesses groundwater stored in the city of Sinjar

A public discussion held of Ph.D student Wadah Mahmoud Shaker from the department of geophysics at the college of science, university of Baghdad, for his thesis entitled (A geophysical study to assess the stored groundwater and the compositional state south of Sinjar northwest of Iraq). The study defined geophysics as a branch of earth sciences interested in studying the earth through the study of variation of physical characteristics of layers of rock, such as the differences between the scores of magnetic properties and their intensity, electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity, gravity, discovering core and crust, movement and migration of oil, natural gas resources as well as seismic measuring devices. The study showed that less than 3 % of fresh water on our planet being in rivers and lakes, while 97% being underground estimated at (100,000 cubic kilometers). The researcher stated that Sinjar is trhe only city in Iqar that contains mountains, plains, deserts and valleys. In addition to that it is characterized with its sweetly water, good climate, fertile soil and groundwater that all help its growth agriculturally, being a perfect area for planting wheat, barley, lentils and chickpeas, tomatoes, onions, beans, fruits like figs, grapes, olives, nuts, tobacco and it also contains springs such as (Solag) and (Khai well).
