University of Baghdad celebrates a scientist who invented a new class of wheat and the first Iraqi loaf of bread

University of Baghdad celebrated the Iraqi scientist, Dr. Ayad Kubbah who produced the first Iraqi loaf of bread pure 100 percent after the invention a genetic mutation (inya 66) by which he received the first patent from the central organization for standardization and quality control for the development of Iraqi wheat production in an innovative style. The president of the university of Baghdad, Dr. Alaa Abdul Hussein, stated in a speech at a ceremony to celebrate this Iraqi scientist that “what this researcher has done is an important national achievement, especially at this stage in which our country is in need for more inventions to develop the agricultural reality, by generating the seeds named “Uruk” in preparation for its distribution among farmers to replace other types prevailing in central and southern regions during the next planting season”. He added saying “we bless today these fruitful scientific efforts that have been achieved concerning this accomplishment which is in direct contact with providing food for citizens, particularly with the current special circumstances related with oil prices worldwide that affected the general budget of the country. We hope that through this innovation, Iraq can fulfill its need of wheat, provides hard currency and we could export it to other countries in the world”. Mr. president of the university received Mr. Kubbah and visted his laboratories at the scientific institute for genetic engineering and biotechnology, kept abreast with his scientific researches through which he participated in many international scientific conferences, published in British, Canadian and Japanese journals as well as the journal of the international atomic energy agency. Dr. Kubbah stated that he has made a survey and many visits for various fields in central and southern governorates of Iraq. especially in Diwaniyah to study the state of the Iraqi wheat where he found a weakness in production and the seeds require improvements since there are many fungi and microbes that cause epidemics. Uruk wheat (inya-66) were subjected to certain doses of Kama ray that affects (Rht alleles) resulting in a reduction of the plant length of 105 cm to 78 cm in this new type and many many studies were conducted on this new variety, published in scientific Iraqi and international during international conferences. This type is resistant to lying down, which leads to product drop up to 40% as well as it is resistant to stem and leaf rust and it responds well to nitrogen fertilization, its bread is very good, showing high productivity than other types of wheat varieties prevailing in irrigation areas. It is worth mentioned that Dr. Ayad Jabur Esaa Kubbah is an assistant professor in the institute for genetic engineering and biotechnology for graduate studies in the university of Baghdad and he has worked in the field of scientific research and university instruction in four Arab countries (Iraq, Jordan, Libya and U.A.E.), participated in many Iraqi, Arab and international scientific conferences and that the encyclopedia of Iraq scientists has considered him as one of the Iraqi scientists in the 20th century in the second part of its first edition. He has worked work in the scientific research council after receiving his Ph.d. in genetics from the university of Wales in Britain, and he began publishing his researches since 1980 in specialized scientific journals in Britain, Netherlands, Japan, Canada and Austria. The ceremony was attended by assistants of president of the university for administrative and scientific affairs, prof. Dr. Riyad Khalil khammas and associate prof. Dr. Osama Fadhil Abdul Latif, dean of the institute of genetic engineering and biotechnology, Dr. Abdul Hussein al-Faisal, a number of directors of university departments, researchers and instructors at the centre.
