The medical education unit in the college of medicine at the university of Baghdad organized a workshop in Istanbul, Turkey on the development of medical education under the auspices of the international medical commission. Distinguished professors in medical education supervised on the training in this workshop, including professor Nigel Bax, the former dean of the Sheffield school of medicine and prof. Deborah Pax, former president of the European board of rheumatology. Workshop agenda included lectures and discussions on communication skills, examinations calendar and reviewing the integrative curriculum of the college of medicine. Thirty-three instructors participated in this workshop and the Iraqi delegation was headed by assistant professor Hilal al-Saffar, director of the medical education unit at the college of medicine and instructors from six colleges of medicine in Iraq (Baghdad, Wasit, Dhi Qar, Diyala), including deans of the college of medicine of Mustansiriyah and of of Wasit, with the participation of three assistants of deans at the colleges of medicine and al-Kindy at the university of Baghdad, heads of departments and the coordinators of integrated curriculum in the college of medicine. The workshop reached at several recommendations, including the need for cooperation between the colleges of medicine in Iraq to establish uniform standards for medical curriculum, data design, principles of development of faculty, curriculum for primary studies and postgraduate training, as well as contacting the ministry of health to reach an agreement on the features of the newly graduated doctor to ensure patient safety and focusing on the importance of including new curriculum-related topics on communication skills, medical ethics and performance evaluation. The workshop also recommended participation in global conferences and attending them through doing researches and studies in collaboration with students and the need for following the latest developments in medical education and clinical training through participation in international journals
