College of engineering discusses the possibility of application of the “smart city” in Iraq
The department of electrical engineering at the college of engineering, university of Baghdad held a scientific symposium for the second semester of the academic year 2013-2014 entitled ” smart city ” within a series of its activities in holding scientific and educational symposiums coinciding with world technological developments. The instructors, Saif al-Din Abdul Amir from the department of electrical engineering and Abdullah Abid Ali Jassim from computer center gave lectures dealing with the theme of smart cities and their application in different cities of Iraq. The lecturers began with defining the concept of “smart” that can be applied to the city, then they reviewed the steps for building a smart city based on human resources, infrastructure, communications and informatics resources. They also discussed the comprehensive solutions provided by IBM Corp. which is considered as one of the most important international companies in the field of smart cities including e-learning, smart health, smart government, smart traffic, smart transportation and green smart building. Then the lecturers examined the reality of Baghdad and how to form an operations’ center for organizing information and data via an advanced network useful for all state sectors and citizens so that to ensure a clean environment in line with sustainability of resources. At the end of the lecture, discussion between the audience and the lecturers opened to enrich the technical and technological aspects of this subject, particularly if this project would be applied in Iraq as part of e-government that relevant authorities are working on. The lecture was attended by a group of professors and engineers from the departments of electrical engineering, surveying engineering and computer engineering at the college of engineering at the university of Baghdad, the university of technology and the institute of urban and regional planning at the university of Baghdad.
