Ibn al-Haitham college holds a symposium on safety in research laboratories and bio-waste treatment


Ibn al-Haitham college of education for pure sciences at the university Baghdad organized a scientific symposium entitled (safety in research laboratories and bio-waste treatment) to meet the requirements of the central service laboratory at the college. A lecture was given by assistant prof. Dr. Abbas Abdul Muaid al-Ani, instructor at the college of medicine, Mustansiriya university, specialized in microbiology. The lecturer reviewed how to deal with biological and chemical materials used in research laboratories and the scientific and appropriate methods of disposal. An emphasis was put on the importance of transporting the samples to ensure their reach in a good condition to laboratory so as to be used in experiments and in case of human samples there should be a protection of the patient, the researcher and the surrounding environment. The researcher stated the the laboratory safety includes wearing gloves to cover hands and feet, using proper methods when dealing with samples. Dr. Abbas hinted also the types of the samples transmitted whether human, bacteria, viruses or fungi and putting appropriate labeling for each type. The symposium was attended by dean of the college, assistant pro. Dr. Khalid Fahad Ali, director of the central laboratory, Dr. Mazen Nawaf Abboud and a large number of instructional faculty.
