The faculty of  nursing at the university of Baghdad presents a study on the effects of spontaneous abortion on the psychological aspect for the quality of women’s lives

The spontaneous abortion is one of the most important adverse outcomes of pregnancy that affects human reproduction and it is  not affected only by the general biological factors such as age, number of pregnancies and the date of the last abortion, but is also affected by the individual and social characteristics and the social environment. In order to find out the relationship between the psychological aspect of the quality of life with the demographic and reproductive variables of the study, the college of nursing carried out a descriptive study on a sample of (200) women suffering from spontaneous abortion present in four hospitals: al-Karkh teaching hospital for maternity, al-Elwiya teaching hospital for maternity, al -Yarmouk teaching hospital, Baghdad teaching hospital. A questionnaire was used as a tool to gather information from February 3 to April 26, 2013 and consists of four parts, including demographic, reproductive characteristics and the psychological aspects of the quality of life. The validity of the content was conducted by (20) experts with the use of descriptive statistics for data analysis. The results showed that (26.5%) of women were of ages ( 25-29 years), body mass index (48%) within a normal weight and ( 27.5 % ) were graduates from the elementary school, (25%) of couples were graduates from colleges or institutes, ( 80% ) were housewives, ( 54.5 %) were of working spouses, (48%) of a low economic level. As for the reproductive information: (66%) of the women were of multiple pregnancy, (25%) of women have at least two births, ( 52.5 %) of women have one previous abortion. As well as the relationship between the psychological aspect of quality of life and demographic information (age )( 0.006 ) and between the psychological and reproductive indicators ( number of births )( 0031 ). The study recommended to carry out an educational program for women during pregnancy that includes (the meaning of the spontaneous abortion, its causes and prevention), promoting mental health care for women in the health care centers and raising awareness of this problem by the ministry of health by distributing booklets and giving lectures.
