The department of earth sciences at the college of science, in collaboration with Ibn Sina E-Learning and Continuing Education Units organized recently a virtual lecture via Google Meet service on “Water Policies for the Tigris and Euphrates Basins” in the presence of professors, researchers and specialists in public policy and water resources.

The lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Nazir Abbas Ansari, a professor at Luleå tekniska universitet in Sweden with the aim to identify the Iraqi strategic water policies regarding the Tigris and Euphrates basins and the most important methods to be followed by the concerned authorities for the purpose of developing sound projects to exploit the rains in increasing river imports. The participants addressed also the question of water scarcity in Iraq, its causes and solutions to overcome and to preserve water security but not at the expense of food security and energy.

The lecturer reviewed the unregulated consumption of water, indicating that half of the agricultural consumption is wasted as a result of the lack of follow-up to modern irrigation methods, as well as the continued waste in the consumption of water by consumers and the necessity for the activation of international laws that oblige the coastal states to follow international treaties that the non-compliance of which might generate conflicts between countries.
