The college of nursing at University of Baghdad participated in a lecture on violence against women and its health effects within the voluntary activities carried out in the volunteer work week at University of Baghdad represented by Assistant teacher Nuha Adel Ibrahim from the department of mother and newborn nursing. The lecture explained the psychological and the physical effects generated as a result of acts of violence against members of the opposite sex, stating that violence against women is a global health problem of epidemic proportions. This lecture dealt with the psychological effects such as depression, fear, anxiety, low self-esteem, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic disorders, shortness of breath, lack of social networking and others in addition to the physical effect such as injuries caused by beatings like bruises and fractures and damage of internal organs, unwanted pregnancies, women’s reproductive health problems, sexually transmitted diseases, abortion, permanent disabilities, harmful behavior (smoking, alcohol and drugs), etc. This lecture came as a result of the educational campaign at a workshop organized by Iraqi women’s rights organization in the presence of a number of legal advisers, lawyers and professors of University of Baghdad and activists in the civil society organizations.
