Impact of wars and disasters on destroying precious manuscripts and documents


Center for revival of Arab scientific heritage at Baghdad University held a seminar entitled (Impact of wars and disasters on destroying precious manuscripts and documents) where the researcher Dr. Alaa Abu al-Hassan al-Alaq, Director General of Iraqi National Library and Archives/Director General of Department of public heritage delivered a paper on manuscripts and books that were exposed to devastation and theft during the war (2003). The workshop was divided into three axes: the first one included looting, burning and causing damage to documents while the second axis spoke about recollecting and rearranging documents. The third axis dealt with restoring the corrupted documents as well as stress on the need to preserve ancient manuscripts for scientific and historical importance. This episode included several discussions by the attendants. At last Dr. Alaa al-Alaq visited the museum of the center and expressed his admiration and willingness for cooperation between the Iraqi National Library and Archives and the center.
