Towards having Iraq as a green oasis, faculty of agriculture looks for combating desertification


On the occasion of world day to combat desertification, the department of combating desertification at the faculty of agriculture, University of Baghdad held its 3rd scientific symposium under the banner “combating desertification is everyone’s responsibility”. At the beginning of the symposium, the dean of the college, Prof. Shaker Abdul Amir delivered a speech in which he commended the role of this department that held during this year three symposiums to identify relevant scientific institutions about the manifestations of desertification in the country in order to build a specialized and a sober scientific base that can be transformed into a reality in the field of combating desertification and to increase the country’s agricultural production. Head of desertification combating department, Dr. Majid khudair Abbas talked about the phenomenon of desertification and its many environmental impacts on loss of biodiversity, soil degradation, low productivity, loss of human and environmental systems when adapting to climate change as well as loss of opportunities to produce food and medicine. To make our country as a green oasis, we should prevent threats and challenges facing Iraqi soil through extended discussion of desertification in Iraq and increasing scientific correlation and exchange of experience between faculty members and other researchers and specialists so that to enable community participation and cooperation in addressing the problem of desertification as well as sustaining information bank concerning natural resources, the need to approach higher authorities for the purpose of providing funds for combating desertification, openness to official and semi-official institutions for the purpose of conducting operations in this regard. There is also a need for enacting State laws to reduce soil salinization through modern means of irrigation, reducing pollution resulting from factories and focusing on the practical side of such legislation.
