Within a series of ongoing activities, the center for research and natural history museum at University of Baghdad has celebrated the international women’s day, in the presence of all instructors and members at the center during which assistant prof. Dr. Amer Metab Hussein, director of the center delivered a speech on this occasion in which he emphasized the significant role of women in particular situations experienced by Iraq and Syria since women are not half of the society but the whole community. Assistant teacher Abbas Kadhim gave a lecture on women and their effective role in society as a mother, sister and wife such as the martyr Bint Al-Huda and Umaia Jbarah. The international women’s day emerged from a human tragedy suffered by women during a famous historical incident in which a heroine was killed in a textile factory in New York, America in 1909 on the 8th of March, where the factory was burned completely with female workers who strike in the first strike of its kind to oblige the head of the factory to implementing their simple demands the most important of which was to improve their wages. The head of the factory not only rejected their demands but also committed his heinous crime and he set fire, resulting in the burning of (72) striking women and a year after that crime, the United Nations decided to invite many public women globally to an international meeting held in the city of Copenhagen, Denmark. One of the main resolutions taken at the meeting was considering the 8th of March of each year as a day for all women in the world.
