Baghdad University hosts a workshop on the preservation of environment and climate

  The Iraqi ministry of health and environment, in cooperation with The United Nations development program (UNDP) held a specialized workshop in the presence of the technical agent of the ministries of health and environment, Dr. Jasim Abdul Aziz Hammadi, the ambassador Mohamed al-Shakarchi, Director General of the department of organizations at the Iraqi foreign ministry, Tariq Islam, the regional representative of (UNDP), as well as other representatives of (15) Iraqi ministries. The workshop aims at discussing the matters relating to the Paris conference for climate in coordination with the ministries concerned to preserve the environment and to discuss new visions and requirements in Iraq according to the recommendations of Paris conference such as the technical, financial, economic and legal requirements lied on Iraq since this convention will be ratified in April to be sent to Paris via the Iraqi foreign ministry. The light was shed upon the theme of renewable energies in the region, the impact of this agreement on oil prices, Iraq’s access to financial support after the Green climate fund submitted a loan totaled $ 1 billion to Iraq. The organizers of the workshop stressed that Iraq is looking forward to benefit from the positive aspects of the findings of the Paris conference like the material and technical support to resist all terrorist attacks in the country, reconstruction of our infrastructure and economy, diversification of Iraqi economy to move towards low-carbon technologies, renewable energies in a way that would achieve sustainable development in Iraq. Baghdad University president, prof. Dr. Alaa Abdul Hussein Abdul Rasul stated that the whole world is directed now towards reducing dependence on oil, noting the need to adopt and activate the Iraqi true industry, along with maintaining oil production, not to waste the oil wealth and reaching a balance between industry and conservation of environment and climate. He also called the sponsors to submit future recommendations for scientific research and real field-testing to take appropriate decisions that would serve the country industrially and commercially that would reflect positively on the sound environment. It is worth mentioned that (195) endorsed the convention reached at the United Nations conference on climate change (2015) in Paris with the adoption of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol for the application of this convention and the protocol entered into force in 2005 where it aimed at reducing heating gas emissions in developed countries and countries with economies in transition in order to prevent the consequences of environmental problems, to be adopted at the turn of 2020.
